Reimbursements from the Highway Trust Fund will be temporarily suspended beginning midnight Sunday, and many USDOT workers will be furloughed next week. Congress was unable to resolve its differences and unable to extend SAFETEA-LU, and has adjourned for the weekend.
And this interruption could last for a week due to disagreements on multiple issues (some transportation related, some not) and legislative procedural issues.
Rep. Peter DeFazio, chairman of the highway subcommittee of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, said “As long as the Senate is a dysfunctional institution and they allow someone to stand up and filibuster, yeah we’ll have a very bad result."
Rep. John Mica, Ranking Minority Member of the House Transportation Committee said "Brinkmanship is common around here but to let it get to this point is going to be pretty disastrous for states that are trying to make decisions and have now even more uncertainty from federal government."

This is utterly appalling to stop funds going through USDOT. Just depressing to see how little congress cares about transportation. Yet so it is in this nation where the fate of transportation depends on the outcome of politics.
