King County has been awarded a $34 million TIGER II grant to help rebuild the South Park bridge.

From the grant application:
"This project replaces the 81-year-old regionally-significant South Park Bridge with a new bridge spanning the Duwamish Waterway in the Pacific Northwest’s largest manufacturing and industrial area. The bridge is south of downtown Seattle and serves as a connection for freight-heavy routes between the Port of Seattle, Union Pacific rail yards, King County International Airport (Boeing Field), and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport. It provides one of only two crossings in the industrial area between Seattle and the southern cities. South Park serves heavily traveled, urban arterials and provides an alternative route to the 1st Avenue South Bridge–one of the region’s most freight-heavy corridors carrying over 10 million tons of freight per year.

The South Park Bridge was closed on June 30, 2010. Structurally, the bridge was deteriorating at such a rapid rate that it was no longer safe to operate. Demolition of the bridge began in August 2010."
