[Update: 60 Republicans joined 190 Democrats to reject the funding cuts. All WA & OR Republican members voted in favor of the cuts. All WA & OR Democrats voted to reject the cuts.]
Earlier today the House voted 250-176 to reject an amendment to cut Amtrak funding by $446.9 million. The amendment sponsor argued that Amtrak is a proven "money-losing venture that the government can no longer sustain and support.”
Amtrak and passenger rail proponents noted the proposed cut would leave essentially no money for track maintenance or other improvement projects during the rest of the fiscal year.
Another amendment proposes to completely eliminate Amtrak funding for the remainder of the year. It's not yet clear if and when this amendment may be voted on.
Should it be offered, the amendment is very likely to be defeated.
